Let Them Eat Cake

Let Them Eat Cake opened on Weserstrasse in 2012 as a project space disguised as a vintage shop, and the shop part won. Karin, who is Swedish and came out of high-end fashion, started it, and it has since grown into what they call themselves on Instagram: a collective of vintage hunters. Several people buying, one rail, one taste. When the guide first came here in 2016 the space was shared with Oh Mini I Am, a 90s specialist. That name is gone. The 90s are not.

The selection runs from the 70s to the early 2000s and is sourced across Europe rather than from the nearest container. What holds it together is condition: everything is cleaned and pressed before it reaches the rail, which is rarer in Neukölln than it should be.

What is worth digging for

The 70s are the historical strength: trench coats, long dresses, shirts with bold prints, and a wall of accessories that deserves its own visit. Next to that, 90s club and grunge wear, denim, and a menswear section that is a real section rather than the usual sad token rail. Guest labels pass through the shop, most recently corsets and lace from a Berlin maker, so the stock turns faster than the address.

Practical

Monday to Friday, one to seven. Saturday, half past twelve to half past seven. Closed Sunday. Weserstrasse 164, in Reuterkiez, about ten minutes on foot from Hermannplatz or Rathaus Neukölln. They do not buy in, do not take commission and do not rent out, so come to buy, not to sell. Prices are fair for the street, most pieces sit well under 70€.

You want 70s with a chic edge rather than a costume. You are a man tired of the single rail at the back. You like a shop where the people behind the counter actually go hunting.
