Friedrichshain, the young district in full mutation
Back in 2017, it was difficult to imagine the face of this district in a few years, with so much undergoing profound changes. Although it is administratively attached to Kreuzberg, it represents a vast area which extends over the eastern part of Berlin, along the Spree over its entire southern part.
On the east side, it’s closed by the Ring and its northern point is lodged in the Volkspark Friedrichshain. Formerly totally encompassed in East Berlin, it is one of the most marked districts by the succession of architectural styles, a succession that continues today as developers are on the lookout to develop pharaonic projects, especially on the banks of the Spree. We can already see examples with the hotel Nhow or the enormous concert hall o2 World.
Large docks on the Spree, rents still low, many industrial wastelands and a very central location … it is obviously the ideal product checklist.

Where to go in Friedrichshain?
Meanwhile, Friedrichshain is still the landmark of young tourists and students, locals in transit. Flats are old and big, which favors flat sharing at reasonable prices, but it’s also about the neighborhood, full of clubs and bars where it is still allowed to make noise until late at night.
For a complete program of discoveries in Friedrichshain, start with the North and stop by tram for example on the Danziger Strasse, then cross the Volkspark Friedrichshain. This former anti-aircraft bunker, by definition indestructible, was covered with rubble and transformed into a park. Here you can admire the “Fountain of Tales”, inspired by the tales of the Brothers Grimm. Walk through the streets to the U-Bahn station Weberwiese and walk alongside the impressive buildings of the Communist Party dignitaries. An architectural style coming directly from Moscow. At the Frankfurter Allee station turn right into the Warschauer Strasse and then immediately left into the Boxhagener Strasse. Lose yourself in the maze of surrounding streets, full of cafe restaurants and small shops.
Among the interesting shops around, do not miss the famous Gothic store Darkstore, Broke und Schön or Trash-Schick, Sometimes Colored or März.
The Boxhagener Platz is the emblematic square of the district, on which is held every Saturday a food market and every Sunday a flea market. It’s a lovely spot to have a coffee in the sun.
Go then down south through one of the streets before Modersohnstrasse to the Revaler Strasse and RAW Tempel.

Clubs and bars, go out in Friedrichshain
From Ostbahnhof to Ostkreuz, just follow the railway tracks to discover an ecstatic chain of clubs. A morning walk on the bridge over it will give you an idea of the ambiance of the local nights. Sidewalks strewn with cigarettes, papers, bottles … remains of nights constantly renewed.
If the legendary Bar 25 has closed for a few years now and has not been replaced decently, there still remains the inestimable Berghain / Panorama bar, the Holy place of any serious clubber and coveted object for any young tourist or student around. Like all good things, it deserves more efforts. The Internet is full of advices and strategies to coax the bouncers, but ultimately there will be only that moment of truth, when they will plunge their eyes into yours. Do not lie.
In case, the Berghain Kantine offers an audacious program and offers a beautiful Biergarten. Also a few steps away from there the Wilder Hase, a vegan Biergarten is waiting for you. Why not.
On the other side of the Warschauer Strasse is the RAW Tempel. Former merchandise warehouses that nowaday host clubs and bars, but also a climbing center or skate. Enjoy this cultural wasteland because the developers are perched like vultures and places like this will soon disappear. If you only have to visit one place this will be Urban Spree. Its beautiful and extensive garden, its tattoo parlor, well-stocked plates and above all, its ambitious musical and artistic programs, with monsters of the underground scene and other large-scale events.
Otherwise, a little tour around the Haubentaucher‘s pool is still quite “wow” and just walk around to feel the atmosphere is pretty nice.
The Suicide Circus is the favorite club of the youngest, as well as the Wilde Renate, although it depends on the evenings.
Leaving these places of perdition in the early morning, why not take advantage of the timeframe to walk along the East Side Gallery, at a time when there will be no one! The powerful frescoes of what remains of the Berlin Wall fit very well with a silence at dawn.
